Why Do We LOVE Red Drinks?

Hint: It’s not why you think

Peace Tribe 🌞

If you’ve ever visited a Caribbean household around the holidays, chances are you were handed a glass of spicy red sorrel as soon as you sat down. It’s not just a drink — it’s a welcome. Bold, spicy, and deeply rooted in memory. Rum optional… most of the time 😉

We honor red drink during Juneteenth, and all year long — not just for its vibrant color, but for the healing, ancestral energy it holds.

The History behind the color an medicine...

From Senegal to South America, the Caribbean, and the American South, red drink is more than just a color. It’s resistance in a glass.

Bissap. Kerkade. Sorrel. Zobo. Vineguera. Agua Fresca de Jamaica. Known by many names — but the love is still the same.

Enslaved people captured from the African continent brought hibiscus with them. It was part of their medicine. They made red drink to heal, to remember — to resist. Then came the big corporations, tapping into our connection to Red Drink by pushing artificial versions like Kool-Aid, Hawaiian Punch, Chubby Soda, High-C, Gatorade, and more — filled with chemical dyes, preservatives, and no actual juice.

They addicted us to bleached white sugar and high fructose corn syrup — ingredients that are still behind many of the health issues in our communities. We went from being forced to grow sugar, to being aggressively marketed sugar in food deserts, bodegas, and our grocery aisles.

It’s time to come back to the real thing. Where food is medicine. And drink is ritual.

🌿 Hibiscus: Our Forever Herbal Crush

As a fifth-generation Master Herbalist, I reach for hibiscus again and again — not just because she’s beautiful (though yes, she’s stunning), but because she works:

  • 💓 Balances blood pressure + heart function
  • 🩸 Improves circulation + iron levels
  • 🌿 Eases digestion + supports liver detox
  • 🔥 Cools inflammation + internal heat
  • 💧 Hydrates without caffeine
  • ✨ Lifts mood + regulates cortisol when paired with rose + holy basil

Let’s make it the way our Caribbean family does — and infuse every sip with healing, intention, and love.

🍷 Choose Your Ritual

Jamaican Ginger Sorrel Refresher (Cooling & Energizing)

Made with our Jamaican Ginger Sorrel blend: hibiscus, ginger, orange peel, cinnamon, clove, and allspice.

Perfect for: Digestive support, circulation, hot-weather hydration

Magic move: Add a splash to your gratitude libations or pour into your bath for a soul reset.

Cosmic Connection Cooler (Relaxing & Restorative)

Made with Cosmic Connection: hibiscus, rose, cinnamon, holy basil, and gotu kola.

Perfect for: Stress relief, hormonal balance, nervous-system reset

Magic move: Sip before journaling, ritual work, or sound baths. Watch the tension float away.

🔮 Make Your Own Sun Tea

1-Gallon Sun Tea Ritual:

  • 💧 1 gallon spring or filtered water
  • 🌞 6–8 Calabash sachets (use either blend above)
  • 🍋 Optional: lime slices, cinnamon stick, fresh mint, or hibiscus blossoms
  • 🍯 Sweeten to your liking — or enjoy unsweetened

Add the sachets to your jar and set your intention. Pour your water in while thinking healing thoughts. Let the sun infuse your brew for 4–6 hours. Remove sachets, chill, and serve over ice.

And before you drink — pour a little out for the ancestors ✨
